Since officially starting medical school last year, I figured it’s time to reintroduce myself! I’m Kristi and I started The Med School Wife blog in 2015 in hopes to not only document our journey, but to become a resource to those in a medical marriage or relationship.

MEDICAL RELATIONSHIPS

I mostly wanted to write about this topic because I couldn’t find much help while in our undergrad for the exception of Reddit pages where people would bash their spouse in med school or tell stories of horror and divorce. Not helpful.

Since my husband started medical school, we have noticed there seems to be a culture where it’s ok to walk away from relationships because medicine is the focus. During one of Blade’s interviews, he was told about half of those interviewing and in a serious relationship would not be in those relationships after the next four years. We have even been wished luck because many medical marriages end in divorce.

Plus, hardly anyone has a kid in medical school so there is “no way” to balance it all. However, I strongly believe that our marriage can be strong and joyful as we are present, work hard, and have fun! In fact, I think we will be stronger in our relationship because of medical school and residency. A strong marriage makes a strong family. I want to be part of strengthening marriages and families, especially in the medical field.

So, The Med School Wife blog was born. I love writing and have a BA in Communications with an emphasis in public relations from Brigham Young University. So, why not create a voice in what was then a sparse online community, become a resource, and encourage those in medical relationships.

A PASSION PROJECT

It took me awhile to get things rolling and publish content. However, since starting the blog, I’ve made loads of connections with other medical spouses and found helpful resources.

Because I aim to be a resource to those applying to medical school and their significant other, as well as to those already on the medical journey, some posts will be more formal and informative, others will be casual and personal.

The Med School Wife blog is one of my passion projects where I can write, create, and share throughout our journey as we prepare and take on the rigors of medical school at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and residency (wherever that takes us) together as a family.

I write about navigating both sides of med school before, during, and after. I have two series that I have recently started, Thoughts on Motherhood and From Medical School Wives. (If you want to contribute to these series shoot me a message!) I also will continue to share yummy recipes and fun date ideas in between!

Check me out on Instagram or Facebook for the daily fun (and grind) between posts.

AS A COUPLE

I probably wouldn’t have a blog named The Med School Wife without the support of the medical student himself. I am the wife of an amazing man who is one of the most driven, dedicated, and funny people I know. Blade and I are coming up on five years of marriage this October. I’ll introduce him another time, but our life together has been one crazy adventure from the start.

We work as a team. We study together, work together, play together, cry together, and laugh together. He even helps me with blog posts and I help him with studying. I wouldn’t have it any other way! This crazy medical journey was something I had to get on board with on my own terms, but that’s another story you can read here.

We are attending the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and will graduate in 2022. Our Journey to Medical School was quite the adventure. One of the things I am most grateful for is that Blade and I make decisions that affect the welfare of our family together. Everything from Choosing a Medical School to the Real Talk of Choosing a Specialty. So far, medical school has strengthened our marriage and family. I hope for and plan for that to continue.

I am excited and nervous to see what this medical journey will bring. Hope you will stop by often! I would love to connect with you!
