From: Samantha hails from Indiana. Graham is from Kentucky and moved to Indiana at age 12.

How did you meet your spouse? We met through the fire service. We were on neighboring volunteer departments.

Where are you in the medical journey? We are in our first year at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

  • Accepted April 2018

How much did you budget for the move?

We decided to buy a home. With two kids and two dogs (one being a great dane), we decided that buying would be the best option for us. With that being said, our budget was $160,000 or no more than $1000/mo.

How did you make the move?

  • We enlisted the help of two friends, my husband’s brother, and dad. Originally, we had a truck and car dolly reserved through
    Budget. They called us the morning we planned to pick up our rentals and stated that despite the fact that we booked a month in advance, there were no trucks big enough for our needs in the area. We PANICKED. After scrambling a bit, we found another truck through
    Penske (quite a bit more expensive) without a car dolly, and made it work.
  • We drove to from Valparaiso, Indiana to Lewisburg, West Virginia. Per GPS the drive is about 8.5 hours. However, it took us about 13 hours with the kids, dogs, and moving truck!! Other than the moving truck issue, the move was smooth.
  • The mountains here in WV were a little scary at first. It’s nothing but flat corn fields in IN, so the mountains were a bit of an adjustment. Also, I apparently get carsick through them lol. Thankfully, I have never thrown up but even when I am the one driving, I tend to get a bit nauseous.

How did you find housing?

We searched Zillow and a Facebook group with the school. At some point, after some research by my husband, we enlisted a realtor.

What would you have changed?

Other than the truck mishap, I don’t think I’d change anything.

What are you glad you did?

We closed on our home June 4th and stayed a couple days to clean up. We painted and renovated some things we wanted to see done. Then we had new carpet put in while we were back in Indiana. Our realtor was amazing, and let the carpet installer in.

Best moving tip for med school?

I loved the fact that we moved about a month before school started! We were able to explore our new town and adventure a bit.
